Sophia Urove
After a transformative experience in a creative nonfiction workshop class in the Spring of 2021, Sophia Urove's lifelong love for story work resurfaced. She was welcomed onto the Life Out Loud Podcast team the following Fall, and has spent her time there hosting authors, editing audio, and stepping into new challenges, like her new role as the Digital Sound Assignment Coordinator and Outside Resources Team Member. Reading, analyzing and handling her peers' pieces means the world to her, and Sophia can confidently say that she wakes up in the morning excited to keep learning and doing the academic work she loves.
Currently, Sophia is in her junior year at John Jay. Although her years as an underclassman were spent dipping her toes into many different subject areas, she never got the feeling that any existing major at John Jay fit her exact interests. Recently, she found others with similar experiences in the CUNY BA program. With the help of her mentor, Professor Christen Madrazo, Sophia made her own major—called Writing for Justice.
You can hear one of her recent pieces, "Discovery and Recovery," on Season 6, Episode 2 on Life Out Loud.
